COMING SOON!

Regulated Paralegals are coming soon to British Columbia, marking an important step toward improving access to justice for individuals and small businesses across the province. As licensed legal professionals, Regulated Paralegals will be authorized to provide legal services within defined areas of practice, offering a more affordable and accessible alternative for many legal matters and reducing barriers to obtaining legal representation.

By expanding the range of qualified legal service providers, the introduction of Regulated Paralegals will help bridge the gap between the growing demand for legal assistance and the high cost of traditional legal representation, ensuring that more British Columbians can obtain timely, professional legal support when they need it.

ABOUT US

WHAT IS A REGULATED PARALEGAL AND HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT FROM PARALEGALS?

A new “Legal Professions Act” was passed in 2024 creating a new type of legal professional in British Columbia called a “Regulated Paralegal”.

Separate from lawyers as well as notary publics, Regulated paralegals will be different and distinct from what they are currently known in BC as Paralegals. Currently, Paralegals work under the supervision of lawyers and are not allowed to provide legal advice directly to the public. A Regulated Paralegal will be governed by the Province, insured, and will be able to provide certain legal services directly to the public similar to a lawyer.

WHY ARE REGULATED PARALEGALS BEING IMPLEMENTED?

The purpose of creating regulated paralegals is to try and fill gaps in the BC legal system by providing an alternative to people who can’t afford a lawyer or are trying to handle legal issues independently. Regulated paralegals can provide a different type of service from what lawyers currently provide.

WHAT SERVICES WILL A REGULATED PARALEGAL PROVIDE?

The scope of services that Regulated Paralegals will be authorized to provide in British Columbia is currently being finalized. As details regarding permitted areas of practice and service offerings become available, we will update this page with the latest information.

CAN I HIRE A REGULATED PARALEGAL NOW?

No, the Legal Act regulations are not yet finalized. There are, however, legal professionals offering services in a similar capacity from the Law Society of BC’s Innovation Sandbox.
